Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) presided over the closing ceremony of the 80th CISM General Assembly and Congress, held today (May 23) at the Grand Maitland, Colombo.
The prestigious global event, which began on May 19, brought together military sports leaders and delegates from CISM member nations to engage in discussions on pivotal issues influencing the future of military sports.
Representing the Defence Services Sports Boards, the Commander of the Army, serving as the President of the Board, along with the Commanders of the Navy and Air Force as Vice Presidents, were present at the closing ceremony.
The closing address was delivered by CISM President Colonel Nilton Gomes. The ceremony included the lowering of the Sri Lankan and CISM flags, accompanied by the playing of both national anthems. The Defence Secretary was also honoured with the CISM Order of Merit by the President. Additionally, the CISM flag was ceremonially handed over to the next host nation.
In his address, the Defence Secretary emphasized the significance of Sri Lanka hosting this esteemed event for the first time, marking a historic milestone for the country. He expressed sincere appreciation to the international delegates for their participation, camaraderie and for bringing the spirit of CISM to Sri Lanka.
Concluding his remarks, the Defence Secretary formally declared the 80th CISM General Assembly and Congress closed.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials from Sri Lanka's Tri-Services and delegates representing 80 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe.
