Colombo, Sri Lanka, June 1 -- Ministry of Defence and Urban Development issued the following news release:
Demonstrating a strong national commitment to environmental conservation, the armed forces joined hands with government institutions, civil organizations, environmental groups, students, and local communities to conduct a series of coastal clean-up programmes across the island under the national 'Clean Sri Lanka' initiative.
The campaign formed part of a nationwide effort to restore and maintain more than 250 identified beaches around the country's coastline. The initiative also aligned with the vision of promoting a cleaner environment, safeguarding marine biodiversity, and enhancing Sri Lanka's appeal as a sustainable tourist destination.
Under the Clean Sri Lanka initiative, large-scale coastal clean-up programmes were conducted across the Northern, Eastern and Southern Provinces with the active participation of the tri-forces, government institutions and local communities, recently (23 May).
In the North, Security Forces (Jaffna) carried out cleaning operations at 30 beach locations across the Jaffna and Kilinochchi Districts, while the Sri Lanka Navy joined efforts to restore and preserve the coastline. In the East, troops of the Security Forces (East), including the 22, 23 and 24 Infantry Divisions, conducted clean-up programmes, with the 541, 542 and 543 Infantry Brigades covering 48 coastal sectors in collaboration with the Navy, Police and community stakeholders.
In the South, coastal cleaning activities were carried out at 34 locations along the Hambantota coastline from Kudawella to Kirinda. Meanwhile, the 59 Infantry Division cleaned nearly 36.5 kilometres of coastline along the Mullaitivu-Kokilai coastal belt.
The islandwide campaign underscored the importance of collective action in protecting Sri Lanka's coastal environment, preserving marine ecosystems and promoting a cleaner, greener future for the nation.Further strengthening the campaign, the Sri Lanka Navy actively participated in the clean-up operations conducted across the Jaffna Peninsula. Naval personnel removed large quantities of plastic, polythene, glass, and other waste materials from coastal areas, helping to preserve the fragile marine ecosystem and maintain clean, visually appealing shorelines. The collected waste was disposed of in accordance with established waste management procedures.
These programmes were carried out under the coordination of respective SF Commanders and Area authorities.
