The 80th General Assembly and Congress of the International Military Sports Council (CISM) took place from 17 to 25 May 2025 at the Grand Maitland Hotel, Colombo. A significant highlight of the event was the conferment of honorary medals and the prestigious title of "Knight" to nine distinguished military personnel for their contributions to military sports and international cooperation.
Among the honorees, Major Nalinda Rathnayaka of the Sri Lanka Army made history as the first Sri Lankan to receive the Knight title, awarded in recognition of his international achievements and commitment to the development of Taekwondo. His nomination was recommended by the CISM headquarters in Brussels.
Major Nalinda Rathnayaka previously represented Sri Lanka at the World Taekwondo Masters Programme in South Korea in 2021 and is the first Army Taekwondo Instructor to achieve the 6th Dan Black Belt. Since 2022, he has served as President of the World Military Taekwondo Committee of CISM, with his tenure extending until 2026.
