Colombo, Sri Lanka, Oct. 27 -- Ministry of Defence and Urban Development issued the following news release:
On 26 October 2026, troops of the 5 (V) Mechanized Infantry Regiment, under the command of the 541 Infantry Brigade of the 54 Infantry Division, commenced evacuation operations to ensure the safety of residents affected by rising floodwaters in the Koorai Grama Niladhari Division, located within the Manthai West Divisional Secretariat Division of the Mannar District.
As water levels continued to rise, Army troops swiftly intervened to safeguard residents in the affected area. A total of 70 families comprising 163 persons were evacuated to the temporary safety centre established at Iluppukadavai Government School. The troops also provided cooked meals to the evacuated families at the safety centre.
Troops of the 5 (V) Mechanized Infantry Regiment continued to assist in evacuation efforts and coordinated with local authorities to ensure the safety and well-being of the affected families.
