Colombo, Sri Lanka, Oct. 2 -- Ministry of Defence and Urban Development issued the following news release:
A special discussion on assessing the feasibility of developing a master plan for the proposed Tourism for Heritage, Resilience, Inclusion and Value-driven Employment (THRIVE) Project, aimed at transforming Colombo and the Western Province into a vibrant, inclusive and economically dynamic tourism destination, was held today (02 October) at the Ministry of Defence. The meeting was co-chaired by Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) and Secretary to the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Eng. (Dr) Asiri Karunawardena.
The discussion focused on the feasibility of developing and implementing a comprehensive master plan for the proposed project, with particular emphasis on effective coordination and collaboration among relevant government institutions and stakeholders.
Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) highlighted the importance of inter agency collaboration in formulating comprehensive development plans, while stressing on the importance to security considerations in tourism related initiatives. Secretary Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Eng. (Dr) Asiri Karunawardena emphasized the importance of close coordination among relevant institutions in progressing the proposed project.
The discussion provided a platform for participating stakeholders to exchange views and identify key considerations towards the further assessment and development of the proposed THRIVE Project.
The meeting was attended by World Bank representatives, senior tri-forces and Sri Lanka Police officers, senior officials of the Ministries of Transport, Highways and Urban Development and Foreign Affairs, the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation, the Municipal Commissioner of the Colombo Municipal Council, and officials of the Urban Development Authority, CMC and the Ministry of Defence.
