Colombo, Sri Lanka, June 4 -- Ministry of Defence and Urban Development issued the following news release:

The ceremony for awarding permanent appointment letters to civil employees of the Sri Lanka Army was held on 01 June under the patronage of the Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd). Upon his arrival at Army Headquarters at Defence Headquarters Complex (DHQC), Kotte, he was received by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Lasantha Rodrigo.

The occasion recognized the valuable contributions of 826 temporary and contract basis civil employees over the years and formalized their absorption into the permanent civil cadre of the Sri Lanka Army.

Speaking at the ceremony the Deputy Minister of Defence highlighted that the initiative was implemented in line with the Government's policy framework and the 2026 Budget proposals to address the long standing employment insecurity of temporary and contract based workers. He noted that many of the beneficiaries had served for many years without being permanent of their job and described the appointments as a significant step towards ensuring social and economic justice, while providing job security and stability for the employees and their families.

The Deputy Minister also commended the invaluable contribution made by Army civilian staff in functioning of the military, particularly during the conflict period and in the post war nation building process. Emphasizing that civilian employees are an integral part of the Army organization, he urged them to continue serving with dedication, professionalism and integrity. He further reaffirmed the Government's commitment to improving their welfare, including fair remuneration, allowances, access to medical facilities and other benefits, while calling on all public servants to uphold the trust placed in them by the people of Sri Lanka.

Senior Army Officers of the Army Headquarters including the Chief of Staff, Maj Gen Nilantha Premaratne and Senior Civil Administrative officials, were present at the occasion.
