Colombo, Sri Lanka, Oct. 9 -- Ministry of Defence and Urban Development issued the following news release:
The 37th General Convocation of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) was held at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Colombo, today (09 October), graced by the Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), as the Chief Guest.
Upon arrival, the Deputy Minister was received by the Chancellor of KDU, Air Chief Marshal Kolitha Gunathilake (Retd), and the Vice Chancellor, Air Vice Marshal W.R.D.M.I. Wickramasinghe. The Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), also attended the convocation as a special guest.
During the convocation, the Deputy Minister presented trophies and gold medals to outstanding graduates of Intakes 38, 39 and 40.
Addressing the new graduates, the Deputy Minister noted that national security extends beyond conventional defence to encompass economic, food, energy, cyber, health and environmental security, highlighting KDU's vital role in integrating military professionalism with academic knowledge, technological innovation and public service.
Deputy Minister Jayasekara stressed the importance of strategic thinking, technological competence, professional integrity and responsible leadership in safeguarding national sovereignty and public welfare. He also highlighted the significance of education reforms, efficient public service, fiscal discipline and economic development in building a resilient nation, encouraging graduates to contribute to national progress through knowledge, innovation and integrity.
