The Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), graced the opening ceremony of the 14th Defence Services Games 2026-2027 as the Chief Guest today (14 August) at the Wave N' Lake Hall of the Sri Lanka Navy, Welisara.
Upon arrival at the venue, the Deputy Minister was received by the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Damian Fernando.
The Defence Services Games brings together sportsmen and women representing the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force, with competitions being conducted across 39 sporting disciplines. The Sri Lanka Navy is hosting this year's Games.
The Chief Guest ceremonially declared open this year's Games, marking the commencement of the inter-service sporting competition aimed at promoting sportsmanship, camaraderie and excellence among tri-forces personnel.
The ceremony was attended by the Commanders of the Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka Air Force, senior tri-forces officers, officials, members of the veteran community and participating athletes.
The Defence Services Games provides a valuable platform for tri-forces personnel to showcase their sporting talents, pursue excellence and compete at the highest levels, while fostering unity, camaraderie and a strong sporting culture among the three services. The Games also provide opportunities for athletes to pursue success at both national and international levels.
