Colombo, Sri Lanka, May 29 -- Ministry of Defence and Urban Development issued the following news release:

Sri Lanka's Defence Secretary, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), participated in the "XIV International Meeting of High-Ranking Officials Responsible for Security Matters" held in Moscow, Russia yesterday (28 May) where he addressed emerging global security challenges in the context of a multipolar world order.

During his address, the Defence Secretary emphasised the growing geopolitical significance of the Indian Ocean and stressed the importance of maintaining the region as a zone of peace, cooperation and shared prosperity. He highlighted the need to uphold freedom of navigation, respect for international law and constructive dialogue among nations to prevent regional rivalries from escalating into confrontation.

He further underscored the importance of international cooperation, intelligence sharing and collective action in addressing modern security threats including terrorism, cybercrime, maritime insecurity and climate-related risks.

Stressing Sri Lanka's commitment to non-alignment and peaceful coexistence, the Defence Secretary noted that smaller states have a vital role in promoting dialogue, trust and regional stability in an increasingly complex global environment.
